Opening recap4 notes
- Ragnar decides that victory made Ian dangerous
Ian wants to withdraw from court after the bloodshed of unification. Ragnar fears that an eighth-class mage can threaten the ruler of a united empire and uses poison that interrupts mana. A friendship that gave Ian extraordinary authority ends because the emperor sees the same power as a threat.
- Ian spends the last cast he prepared
As the poison takes hold, Ian retrieves a dagger carrying his time spell. He believes he can use it once if he acts before the poison reaches his heart. He wakes farther back than he expected, thirty years earlier, and recognizes the opportunity to change the life he remembers.

- An aptitude exam becomes a political encounter
Ian demonstrates that he can hold two spells at once. The examiners question how a child acquired the technique and use a spell that reads bodily reactions during questioning. Once his aptitude is established, a mage invokes the authority of the imperial family and Ivory Tower in a dispute over the treatment of Ian’s mother.
- A familiar loss gives the new life a different goal
Ian remembers that his mother died from illness in the year after he began studying magic. His plans for her came too late in the old life. The chance to protect her gives him a concrete reason to act early, alongside his anger at Ragnar.
Powers & world rules4 notes
- A prepared spell has an activation window
The dagger carries a spell written in the language of dragons. Ian prepared it through research and describes a single cast in the time before the poison reaches his heart. His surprise at the landing point leaves his ability to choose the exact date unverified.

- Spellcraft and mana storage have separate tests
Greenriver’s childhood screening checks for a mana brain, which enables magic to manifest, and a mana heart, which produces, circulates, and stores mana. Possessing both qualifies a child for the academy. Graduates can gain standing comparable to nobility.
- A remembered technique can exhaust the current body
Ian can still cast a paralysis spell, but the exertion consumes his available mana and leaves him with a headache. The opening demonstrates remembered technique and a current resource ceiling separately.
- Truth testing reads a response
The examiner’s interrogation spell uses bodily signs such as heartbeat to judge an answer. In this scene it accepts Ian’s claim that nobody taught him the display. That outcome establishes how the examiner evaluates an answer and leaves the spell’s wider accuracy open.

A Spark Before Winter
Original game concept
An eight-turn crafting and scheduling game. A former engineer wakes as an apprentice with a complete blueprint for a furnace safety device. The machine requires more power and materials than the apprentice can access, and the inspection that precedes the old disaster is already on the calendar.
Core loop
- Read one remembered failure and its cause on a workshop schedule.
- Spend each day building a module, practicing to raise your power limit, or working for access to the right material.
- Install the device before the furnace starts. The schedule shows which events changed when your work became public.
- What the player decides
- Demonstrate your best design to get a patron’s parts immediately and bring forward the next inspection, or work privately with cheaper modules and spend more of the remaining days assembling them.
- First playable test
- One workshop board, eight days, three modules, and two routes to a working safety device. Every recipe shows its capacity requirement. Check whether players can explain why remembering the blueprint alone did not solve the emergency.
